Lessons from Audrey Hepburn

When I was about twelve my parents gave me the film 'My Fair Lady' staring Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle and I fell in love. I was amazed by her elegance, classic style and beauty and just wished I could possess all of those qualities myself. What most drew me to see Audrey as a role model though, was not just her facial beauty, as a recognized fashion icon and silver screen legend, but her personality and kindness.

She inspires today's post, as a teacher and an inspiration, and I think there are so many lessons we can lean from her!

In the later years of her life, Audrey focused more of her time on the charities she had previously done work with alongside her film career. In 1992 she was Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of her work as a UNICEF Goodwill ambassador in impoverished countries.

"It is that wonderful old-fashioned idea that others come first and you come second. This was the whole ethic by which I was brought up. Others matter more than you do, so, don't fuss dear; get on with it."

Something which seems to have had a relaxed in the twenty first century is good manners, and that stretches well beyond just simple table manners. For an unknown reason they seem to have become a rarity, however this does not remove them from being a valued personality trait and being important. Audrey was always perfectly graceful, and it can almost be seen as a sign of politeness. Audrey taught us that failure and rejections should not be made a scene about but accepted, and on the other end of the spectrum, successes should not be used to make other feel worse about themselves.

"As a child, I was taught that it was bad manners to bring attention to yourself, and to never, ever make a spectacle of yourself"

Own Your Style:
Many of the clothes that Audrey wore, even in her youth, are still items that we wear today. She was queen of the classic style, and always dressed on trend with classic pieces she knew would not become unfavorable quickly. She was also an advocate for embracing your own style. Audrey was well-known for her little black dresses.

“Why change? Everyone has his own style. When you have found it, you should stick to it.”

Be uniquely, yourself:
When you spend too much time thinking about what other think of you, you become consumed by it. When that happens, what you think of yourself falters, and you forget. Audrey knew she was in the public eye, but she never bought into what people thought or expected of her. She knew who she was without being told by other people.

"I never think of myself as an icon. What is in other peoples minds, is not in my mind. I just do my own thing."

Don't Over-share:
With social media, the most popular way for people to share information with each other these days, everyone can know or learn nearly whatever they want about anyone, particularly celebrities. Audrey had her private life, and that was something she kept very private. She knew the things she wanted to share with the world, and was very strict as to only share those things she was happy for anyone and everyone to know.

"There are certain shades of limelight that can wreck a girls complexion"

My Favorite Audrey Quotes:

"I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles."

"The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It's the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows & the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years."

“Make-up can only make you look pretty on the outside but it doesn’t help if you are ugly on the inside. Unless you eat the make-up.”

"I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think its the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. Its probably the most important thing in a person."

"If I'm honest, I have to tell you I still read fairy-tales, and I like them best of all!"

Remember. Dream. Aspire. Succeed,

Every new year that passes bring with it something new and exciting. Adventures, experiences, friendships, love, events and memories. These are the things that stand out to us at the end of a long year, and the things we cling on to.

In previous years, I've let the new year come and go, without really giving it a second thought as to what I hoped the new year would bring. In previous years, although each year was different, they were still all alike, and I knew what to expect. Those were the High-School years, and although I grew up, matured and different things happened in each of those respective years, when I look back, I still group them as being sort of 'the same.'

This year is entirely different. For the first time I really don't know what lies ahead of me. I know that I'm going to attend university, and basically, that's about it. A lot of things in my life right now are changing, but in a different way than they ever have before. I'm going to head off to university, I'm not going to know anyone when I start there, and there's really not going to be any familiarity to begin with, but I know I'm not the only one who will feel the same way on day one. I'm really looking forward to this year, and I really feel like its going to be a good year. I have so much hope, and not-so-many expectations, but this Fresh Start, is the perfect thing I need.

Unlike previous years, where I just let the year begin without giving it too much though, this year I have. One thing that is so important to me, is that no matter what I do is that I stay grounded, and remember what is important in life. I try not to get too consumed by what the world wants me to be, or expects me to be, and most importantly I try to make sure I don't take things for granted. This year I created a Inspiration List, with all the things most important to me this year, and the things that if I ever get lost, I know will lead me back home.

These are the things that no matter what, I want to make sure I remember this year, and that I don't forget. This year is going to be amazing, and full of so many new experiences that I can't wait to discover.

What are you most hoping for this year?

All my love,

101 Things in 1001 Days

I am so excited to announce that I'm joining '101 things in 1001 days' movement! I've been following the one on Mackenzie Horan's website Design Darling for a very long time now, and I thought since its the new year, what more perfect a time to start my own?!

Some of you may have noticed that I added a '101 in 1001' tab under my categories a few days before this was posted and it only directed you to my homepage. I couldn't give the full list away so soon or before I officially started in the New Year! (Although, I'm so excited that I very much wanted to!) None the less, now its open and you can keep track of my progress by simply clicking that tab on the right!

I am so excited to begin, and I think it will be the perfect thing to keep me motivated, and to make me actually do things that I want to do! Like Mackenzie said, its the perfect balance between a bucket list and to-do list! 1001 days is approximately 2.75 years which means everything needs to be completed by 1st October 2017!
